Your next task

The homework I will be setting on Wednesday 14th September is:

Choose print advert of your choice (i.e. an advert from a magazine or billboard)
  • Describe
    • Denotation (what is there - media language)
    • Connotation (what it means - media representation
    • How is the message being communicated

  • Analyse
    • Why has the producer (media institutions) done this?
    • Who is the audience?
    • How do you know?
 Deadline the following Wednesday (21/09/2016)
If you can't find an advert, here are some helpful links:

Post-Its

Here are some of the responses from the "Post-Its" task I set. Some interesting thoughts:

"I want to be a graphic designer so [I am interested in] the use of advertising and [the] impact it can make"
  • One of the things we'll be looking at is how to fulfill certain key media industry roles such as designer and producer, particularly with regard to the need to meet deadlines and do appropriate research
  • Although we won't be doing moving image directly, we will be considering it as part of Media Language. The work we do at GCSE is designed to prepare you for A-Level , where moving image is a central element - there will be a lot of graphic design tasks, however
  • I can guarantee that it is hard (but rewarding) work!
"I am here because I want to learn about media and how it has changed"
  • An important question that we need to ask is how much the media uses us and how much we use the media. We will be considering this question later in the term. Is the media a product of society, or does society reflect the media it consumes?
  • We will also be considering the choices made by media producers and how those choices are designed to influence audience. One of the assessment modules will be on advertising, and we will consider how persuasive language (spoken, written and visual) is used to make products desirable
  • Crucially, the media is constantly changing; as I mentioned yesterday, the media you access today will be different this time next year
"I enjoy analysing things"
  • Every assignment we do in media studies includes research and analysis into existing products, and analysis/ evaluation of your own products.
"To learn more about modern technology"
  • When you are designing your own products, you will need to use digital cameras and Adobe Photoshop; we have the most up-to-date version, used by professional designers and photographers
"Honestly, I took it because it didn't know what else to take, but so far it does actually seem interesting"
  • Nice to know.
"I chose media studies because... it sounded cool"
  • It is cool. Media studies students are the definition of cool.
